Viennese Congress Cake

In 1814 the rulers, princes and most distinguished statesmen of all European countries came to Vienna to reorganize the political situation after 25 years of war. The Congress of Vienna would not only ensure peace throughout Europe, but also the development of one of our most popular Oberlaa specialities. After all, the political delegations were followed by the world’s best chefs and patissiers, who tried to outdo each other at the numerous festive occasions surrounding the Congress of Vienna. A confectioner left a special impression with his delicious nut cake, which soon became the congress participants’ favourite.

Inspired by this exquisite delicacy, our master confectioners created the Viennese congress cake. Just like back then, the finest caramel mass, butter, milk, honey and crunchy walnuts are wrapped in butter shortbread and baked in the oven until golden brown. Our Viennese congress cake – then as now, an extraordinary treat.
