It was in 1682 when the term “Baumkuchen” was first used to describe this delicious pastry. The structure of the cake is designed to resemble the growth rings of a tree. The thin slices of dough, which are tightly layered on top of each other, are first enriched with marzipan and spices and then baked, thus creating the ring-like structure of the cake.
